Yeye’s Magical Indigo is a liberating story of 3 generations disconnected by the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Even though Nike is kidnapped from her home and family in Yorubaland, West Africa, and sold into slavery in South Carolina, USA, she finds a connection with her culture when she teaches her own daughter, Sella the secret ways of adire (ancient indigo textile). This book exposes young readers to the cultural exchange between West African and African-American history and tradition. The book also features poetic, traditional colloquialisms written by songwriter and musician Thandiwe (also known as one half of the duo OSHUN), and the vibrant illustration styles of visual artist and filmmaker Michael John McIntosh.
